Yes it is, and you should play it! 19 votes (35%)
No, it's a simulator with adventure elements. Skip it! 12 votes (22%)
No, but I'd like to see The Adventure Gamer play it anyway. 15 votes (28%)
I've never heard of it and my Google doesn't work. 7 votes (13%)
Ignoring those poor unfortunate souls whose Google has been playing up and were therefore unable to form an opinion, the end result is that more people voted that Captain Blood is not an adventure game than did in the affirmative. Despite that result, I’ll still be playing the game, as the amount of voters who want to see me play through it came to 34 against only 12 who didn’t. I do wonder whether every genre question poll is going to end up with a similar result, but then that doesn’t bother me all that much (not yet anyway). The system I have in place automatically rules out any totally unheard of games and those that have absolutely no ties to the adventure genre, so the worst that could happen is that I play through some reasonably popular games that have at least some connection to what this blog is all about. In the end, my goals for The Adventure Gamer blog are all to do with the community, so I’m more than happy to play the games that community wants me to.
So, with Captain Blood set to line up among the 1988 games, there’s only one other game that needs to be voted upon. This time it’s not so much about whether or not the game is an adventure (no-one’s disputing that), it’s about whether or not it’s notable enough or good enough to be considered worthy of attention. Be aware that the game is considered one of the very worst examples of the genre, so whether or not you feel that means it should be included or excluded is up to you. I have a feeling I know which way the readers will go, but look forward to trialling this system regardless.
Oh, the game is actually based off the movie? That seems a little more interesting now.
ReplyDeleteYeah I didn't get that the first time either. I'm really curious about it, now, too.
Delete"Mother? They made a game about us. You want me to do want, Mother? Anything you say, Mother."
ReplyDeleteI plan to kill my own character in the shower halfway through the game!
ReplyDeleteSeems like you already decided to play it. :)
DeleteI think the poll has already decided that for him.
Delete2/3rds of votes are in favour of him playing it.
DeleteCGA truly is horrifying, isn't it? I was so glad when things moved to glorious EGA.
ReplyDeleteMy earliest memories are of CGA games... so primitive, true, but interesting how the imagination compensated. Also amazing what the game artists created given the limitations.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to Psycho since I think you can learn just as much (maybe more!) about a genre from its worst examples as from its best.
Yikes! That is a lot of votes, you poor, poor soul. I hope you don't turn into a murder after playing it!
ReplyDeleteIts hard to make a decision on your new poll, I love QfG and Space Quest equally... Sigh. I guess I'll have to go with Space Quest just because I always played thieves and QfG 2 and 3 didn't give me much thiefy stuff to do...
