What's Your Story? - Pacpix

With the 1990 year ahead post up, I imagine I might start getting a few more What's Your Story entries coming through. After all, there's no easier way to earn 20 CAPs! Below is one that came through prior though, from one of the younger readers.  He might be a product of the late nineties, but his favourite movie is from 1984 and a few of his favourite games are from the same period. It seems retro gaming isn't just a nostalgic thing!

Pacpix: No need to ask where this avatar comes from!

My home country is... USA

My age is… 16

The first adventure game I played was… Scooby-Doo Show Down In Ghost Town is the one I have the most memories of.  It might have been a Putt Putt game though.

There's at least one Scooby Doo game on the list, but I don't think this one is

My favourite adventure game is… I have not played very many adventure games, until I found this blog I always thought the Zelda series would be considered an adventure game.  If I had to pick one it would be Deja Vu on the NES.  I  prefer the first person perspective style of the MacVenture games compared to games like Beneath a Steel Sky. I still need to play Uninvited and Deja Vu II.

When I’m not playing games I like to… Watch the Seattle Mariners on TV or spend the day reading about video game history

Baseball is not very popular in Australia, but as a cricket fan I can see the appeal

I like my games in (a box, digital format)… I definitely prefer physical copies of my games.  I also collect games so I like having a physical item I can display and it is fun to look for them at pawn shops.  I buy my movies and CDs physical too. You can see my collection here: vgcollect.com/pacpix  (They have an awesome forum community too if you are interested!)

The thing I miss about old games is… I wish that the newer games were more difficult and did not hold the players hand so much.  I'm not saying every game needs to be as hard as Wizardry(I just beat this finally!), but I would like a better challenge.

You mean this Wizardry? That's a big achievement! I'll just be happy with my Manhunter 2 completion.

The best thing about modern games is… The graphics.  I spent hours just walking through Oblivion looking around at everything.

The one TV show I never miss is… I don't really watch a whole lot of TV except for Mariners Baseball and Seahawks Football.  I usually watch Pawn Stars every week though.

If I could see any band live it would be… I would have to go to a Weird Al/Sepultura/Katatonia/Metallica/Five Finger Death Punch/Death/Anathema/The Cars/Judas Priest/Modest Mouse/Black Sabbath/The Sword Concert :)

Would it be mean of me to tell you that I saw Katatonia with Opeth in Sydney a couple of weeks back?

My favourite movie is… Ghostbusters, followed closely by Kung Pow Enter the Fist and UHF

One interesting thing about me is… I can sleep through a Doom/Death metal alarm at full volume.  I also enjoy really stupid puns and antijokes.

  1. With you on the sleeping through death metal (though I tend to prefer power metal for alarms - it's better at going really crazy fast loud then dying off then hitting you again.)

Wizardry for PC or Wizardry for NES? :)

    1. I played the NES version. I did the whole thing without cheating, even made maps with graph paper!

    2. I guess you've had an easier time than I've had with it. 22 hours and I'm no better off, having just lost my main characters. I can definitely attest to its difficulty.

  2. Hey Trickster, does Katatonia still play their old stuff like Brave Murder Day at concerts? I don't enjoy their new stuff as much as their first two albums.

    1. No, I'm afraid they only played tracks off their last four or five albums. I was hoping we might see some stuff off Brave Murder Day, since Mikael from Opeth did the vocals on that album, but it didn't happen.

Still, they were great, and I like their new stuff a lot. Not as much as the earlier albums though.

    2. If you go to Rate Your Music, you can see my Brave Murder Day review, along with about 500 others. That's what I spent all my time doing before I started this blog.

    3. I also like their new stuff, I guess I just was expecting too much after listening to Brave Murder Day. I still enjoy it, which I can't say about Sepultura past Arise.
I will have to check out your reviews, always looking for some good Doom/Death and Death/Thrash.

      Here are my CDs:

  3. So the Trickster is a cricket fan eh? Here in the States we refer to that particular game as the game that makes no damn sense. I've even asked one of my English friends to explain it to me, and I believe I left the conversation even more confused about the game than I was going into it.

    1. This coming from the home of gridiron (that's what we call American football, just so we don't get it confused with football (rugby union), rugby league, soccer or Aussie rules.
      Anyway, cricket is very simple.
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have got out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

See, like I said, simple. Of course it's slightly different if it's a test match over 5 days, a limited overs one day match or 20-20 game.

    3. Ok, while I haven't watched Criket, Dad has explained the rules to me while we were driving to D&D, and I could barely follow that. I conclude that it is a needlessly complex explanation designed to drive people mad.

I both approve and disapprove at the same time.

    4. You were driving to Dungeons & Dragons?! How far is that from Canada?

      Delete
    5. That would be the drive from where I live (Burlington, I feel fine telling you as I'm moving next Tuesday) to Toronto, to play with my Dad's gaming group of 30 something years.

    6. I wish my dad was that awesome.

Actually, my dad's pretty awesome. He's just not a gamer.

  4. Sixteen years old and you like retrogaming and video game history!!! Hats off to you, sir!

I have a brother, 20 years old (I am in my late thirties), and he's totally a graphic-olic gamer. I wish I could instill in him some old-school gaming love.

PS: And you play old crpg's making your own maps! I'm shocked!!!

  5. And a Weird Al fan. This world needs more younger people like you.

  6. Someone else who remembers Putt-Putt! YAY!

Man, I haven't listened to any Weird Al stuff in years and years. Same with the Arrogent Worms. Man, I need to catch up on it. I've been listening to too much jazz, blues and metal I guess.

  7. By the way, The Humble Bundle project is now doing weekly deals, and since they contribute to both the EFF and Child's Play, I'd appreciate it if you'd add them to your CAP sale list.

For example, this week at https://www.humblebundle.com/ you can get The Room (Puzzle game, that looks somewhat adventureish), and Another World, which looks kinda Adventure Game ish. Not a strong week for them, but not a bad one either.

  8. Alright: First order of business: Papo & Yo http://store.steampowered.com/app/227080/?snr=1_4_4__106_2 is on sale on steam, and looks adventure game-y. Time to restore some spending CAPS.

  9. Alright: I'm going to host my own little contest to thank Trickster for making such a lovely blog.

One of my all time favourite games is on sale on steam. The first person to guess what game it is, and post it here, gets a copy of it. This must be done before the sale ends.

No checking my Steam profile, that is cheating (Honours system, people).

    1. Actually, I've purchased a copy of it already so I can gift it to you after the game goes off sale, though that will make it quite a bit harder to figure out what it is. So in practical terms, you can guess until the end of the sale, but I can still give you the game at the sale price after the contest ends.

    2. Well, the only game currently on sale that looks at all likely to me is Tomb Raider, so I'll guess that. Not sure if I'll have time to play it, but it would actually be my first time.

      Delete
    3. Sorry, not that one. I'm HOPING there aren't regional issues here, as I can only see what is on sale in my region.

My brother is a big fan of Tomb Raider, but I haven't played it yet, and probably won't for a very long time.

      Delete
    4. As tomb raider is not on sale here in Australia... Well, could we at least maybe get a genre? Unless you're a big strategy nut, I don't think there's anything that stands out on sale for me at present - Stronghold 3?

      Delete
    5. Try using http://steamalerts.com I can see the game I am thinking of on the list. If you manage the genre then you can get the game pretty easily.

      Delete
    6. No, it is not Stronghold 3.

      Delete
    7. Warning: An hour left. I've got a plan on what to do with it if no one gets it though.

    8. Alright, the sale is over. The answer was Audiosurf. http://store.steampowered.com/app/12900

Now, I'm going to give the copy to Trickster. I suggest that you play the demo http://store.steampowered.com/app/12900 and decide if you like it, and if you don't, use it in a contest or something. Email me and let me know what you want to do with it.

      Delete
    9. Better wrap it nicely. :)

      Delete
    10. Sigh, I actually looked and seriously considered Audiosurf. But when you say it's one of your "all time favorite games", I guess I assumed it would be older than that. Not necessarily the case and a poor assumption on my part.

      Delete
    11. Tis why I suggested Stronghold. I'd figured the franchise might be what you were suggesting. But yeah. I'll admit that I suck too much at that vein of game to enjoy it properly - I refuse to get less than one hundred percent wherever humanly possible in that sort, as 100% is so very definitely achievable... Well hitting all of the red bricks on solo from what I recall is what I ended up trying to do incessantly whilst playing.

      Delete
    12. Yeah, no, Audiosurf is a great little game. I should really play it more, and it is worth the $2.50 it often goes on sale for. Heck, it is worth the $10 or $20 or whatever it is normally.

Try playing on Mono then; your goal is simply to get every white brick, and 100% some songs is quite easy.

Point-and-click adventure game that is a satire of gaming wrongs and cliches. It's 75% off though.
