Innocent Until Caught: Lovable Rogue, Error, Lovable Not Found (Request for Assistance)

 Written by Morpheus Kitami

The trains must run all the time, even when nobody is riding them, that, or they didn't want a random NPC here.
Last time, I thought I got defeated by an insurmountable glitch in which I could not enter a subway car. Being somewhat wise, I held off on calling it quits until you guys had a look. Lo and behold, Busca comes through and saves my bacon with a link to a post saying the exact cycles I need to fix the issue. I don't know if this is a DOSbox issue or if there really are only a handful of machines that this game could work on in real life. It would certainly explain why Innocent Until Caught is on the lesser known side.

Inside the subway car is an aerosol can and no way to determine where I'm at. In case you thought that inventory was getting crowded, don't worry, it's all of us. You, me, and Jack. He says it as soon as I pick up the can. Getting off is not that easy, it's not a rapid thing, but depending on how quick you are you may not get off.

I end up at...Regurgit? Regurgitate? Regurit-Tayte? I guess the Romans did name their exits vomitoriums, so it isn't...entirely inaccurate. Getting out proves to be tricky, because in the time since I last played, I've forgotten that you have to click on the hotspot with your walking icon. Adventure Game Studio really trips up my thinking...or maybe I'm being too nice to this game.

If you're observant, you can spot something I missed here.
Outside it looks like Coney Island to me, or at least a facsimile of it. There's a bench and a hotdog stand I can do nothing with. A fly buzzes around to the left. The first door leads to an office which is closed except for the front door. The second leads to a police station where an unlucky woman is being arrested by an evil cop and a desk sergeant watches. I can talk to him, but only to tell him that I'm the greatest thief in the galaxy...which he doesn't believe.
"Look son, scenic bushes!"
Next stop on my train tour is East Eruk. There's a locked maintenance door in the subway, I'll have to come back later for it. (No, the screwdriver doesn't work) Outside, looks like somewhere akin to a theme park, because it's a zoo. There's a dad who's taking his kid to see...something at this hour of night, and the kid whose balloon I definitely don't have to steal at some point. The only path Jack will take is to a zoo exhibit, which has a valuable egg in it, but I'm on the wrong side to reach it.
I wonder if jokes about art like this will still be relevant four hundred years in the future?
After a couple trips through places I've already been, my next stop is The Hill. Smells like money, looks like money, which probably means a dozen traps. The first building is an all-day art gallery. Inside, beyond the boring old exhibits that Jack wants nothing to do with, is a fancy object behind a glass case, by Renato Spangle. It's alarmed, so it must be valuable. Outside, the only thing further is a locked door next to some cameras and a mushroom I can pick up. Jack now says his inventory is full, to which I have to ask why I get the fancy inventory to begin with?
Jack has a lot of options for how to approach this conversation...
I've now been everywhere and sort of have two things I can do. I just need to figure out how to dealarm the object in the gallery and find a backdoor to the zoo exhibit. So I wander around looking at stuff, until I return to that office next to the police station. It's a bank and there's a button next to the door I can press. A guy pops out and tells me to go to a teller. Huh, well, how can I do that? The windows are closed. Turns out I can talk to the windows, and then a woman pops out. I can threaten to rob the place or open an account. Hey, maybe that's what the money's for! I can't put it through the window, but I can give it to the guy at the door, at which point the window won't open and I guess I have to find something else to do.

Wandering around for a bit, I end up back at the zoo. While messing around with my items, I found out you can use the screwdriver. Since the game draws my attention to the balloon...I used the screwdriver on the balloon, and the game lets me. The father doesn't even care, so now I can pick up that string. We're losing the lovable part of lovable rogue, and the worst part is I don't even know what the string could be for.

I come back to the hot dog cart and notice that there's a hot dog on it. A stone, cold hot dog. Without thinking, I pick it up. Oh, I can't put it in my inventory because it's full. Well, I guess I'll drop it...and I can't on this screen. Well, that's just great design. I reload, drop the newspaper in the bank, and then realize that this was all pointless because I know exactly where to use the hot dog, on a plant in the exhibit which looks like it eats meat. Which I can't reach yet because I don't know how to find the back door to the zoo.

Back at the pawn shop, the guy is out in front of where the vase I pinched was. He doesn't know I pinched it, so I can try selling him a bunch of stuff I have. Against my better judgment, I try the deflector ring. He then tells me that it must have taken a lot of skill to steal this, and he has a wealthy client, willing to pay any price for three treasures. The egg of a rare bird located in the local zoo; The sculpture I already noticed in the museum; Treasure Bonds in the local bank. Aha, we've finally found our way into the main plot, even if I've already figured that two of these three things are worth stealing. Hopefully I didn't screw up the order of events by already putting the cash into the bank.

It's hard to tell, but when I use the doorbell, Jack will ask for his bag back, they'll say what bag and I can potentially do something while the door is open. Potentially, because I've got nothing. We'll come back to this. It now occurs to me that I can use the passport to fool someone else into thinking that I'm that person. Possibly. It isn't like the game tells me who it belongs to. Unfortunately, it isn't good for the boat's guard robot...or the police or the guy at the doorbell.

Okay, at this point, it's been a while since I've made actual progress that didn't feel like me trying everything on everything. Guess I should think on how I can do something. I've figured out I need to get into the exhibit somehow, change the valuable egg there with the egg I have, and since there's a meat-eating plant, use the hot dog I have. If I get some way to capture that fly wandering around, I can stick it in the jar for some reason.

Still, what if the dog is used in that hole in the alley I may not have mentioned? Or with the fly? No, nothing. Camera flash does nothing to those two things, also, camera needs recharging after about four shots. I figure at this point that I really need to get a badge or something from the police station to further the plot...and I can't figure out how to do so in the slightest. I'm playing Elvira II on my own blog, and despite being a frustrating experience where I'm banging my head against a wall, it somehow feels easier than this.

Our hero, everyone.
Eventually, I find myself back at the bar, trying anything in vain. And then I hit upon another awful, evil idea. That serving robot? I can call it and use the screwdriver to remove the circuit board for it. Our hero, everyone. I believe the intention is that I somehow disable the one of the ship, but I can't approach that without first somehow disabling it. Which I can't do. The circuit board doesn't work on anything else, so that seems to be the intention.

More wandering around, until I head for the museum again and idly try to steal the exhibits. I manage to steal a scale model of a planet...I.E., a ball...or pellet as the game prefers to mention. (I'm no longer carrying the beer or the newspaper, since the use of either will become apparent as soon as one does show up) Aha, I show this to the copper, get arrested and then find something in the prison cell...no...I can use this on the robot to disable it, then replace the board...no...Sell it...? No.

Randomly trying items with other items on my inventory eventually results in me attaching the lid to the jar. Something I tried and failed to do back when I got it. I want to point out something, you can only click on that jar around the actual pixels, not the see-thru stuff. No, I can't use the screwdriver on anything. Or the perfume or the oil can. At some point, this stuff is going to actually become useful and I'm going to be immensely frustrated.

I wander around talking to people again. The pawnbroker will remind me of the treasures I'm trying to get...and nobody else has anything new to say. The biker and the matron are both done. The kid doesn't want to talk to me for some strange reason. His father, the bar patrons and the police officer all have nothing to say to me right now. The guy wandering around at the space port and the lady outside the bar say nothing. The security guy at the spaceport wonders what I'm still doing there.

At this point, I've been wandering around for a while, doing nothing, and the only thing I've done is rain on a kid's parade and found the main plot. Everything else? Nothing, nada, ja nai. At this point I'm tired of doing things and feeling like I'm getting nothing out of it, so I might as well end here with a Request for Assistance. I've got nothing at this point. Nothing at all. I've tried, I've meditated, I've failed.

To recap what I've figured out and done so far:

  •  The first treasure I need to steal is in a museum case which is alarmed. I have nothing that can dealarm it. I suspect that I'll figure that bit out eventually as I play through. Or I'm dumb and missed something I was supposed to do.
  • The second treasure I need to steal are bonds in a bank. I gave them money, but still need to get in somehow. Nothing I have seems to work. Again, I suspect that the solution will be easy to figure out once I have what I actually need.
  • The third treasure is a rare animal egg, on display in the local zoo. I know nearly exactly what I should be doing here. Feed the hot dog to the meat-eating plant in front of the nest, replace the egg with the regular one I have. Unfortunately, I don't know how to actually get in there. I know there's a boat which is guarded by a robot, but I can't disable it to get on.
  • There's a locked door in one of the subway rooms. It'd be nice to open it.

Apologies for the short entry, but it's not from a lack of trying on my part. Next entry from me will be on Halloween, this year's horror movie adaptation, which I would give a hint for, but chances are you'd never see it coming anyway. Stay tuned.

  1. There's something else you can do with the hot dog cart.

There's something you can do to the bank door while it's open.

There's something you can do with the circuit board and another item.

    1. @Morpheus: Let us know if this helps or if you want/need further hints. [To avoid confusion: Anon above wasn't me.]

    2. There's nothing I can currently get that works with the bank door, and yes, I found the bit of the bank door that I need to use. The other two hints worked out well.

    3. Does that mean you're good to go for the time being or are you still / again stuck because of the bank door and want us to see if we can find & give further hints on that (by degrees and in ROT13, if possible)?

    4. Since Anonymous is implying that there's something I should be able to do to the door now, and I can't figure it out at all/the point is so small that even in getting it right it didn't come off that way, I'd like further hints.

    5. You need to get something from the brothel first.

    6. Wow, the person who found that part out is really, really, really, lucky.

    7. An appropriate statement about someone going to a brothel. ;)

  2. Thanks forhelp, but you'd better ROT13 the hints, for not all of them may appear to be necessary at once.

    1. I don't think an anonymous poster can delete their messages. That said, I don't mind since all of them were vague enough.

  3. "Ices"? I'm no native speaker, but wouldn't that usually be "ice-cream"? Don't think he's selling frozen water cubes (or whatever liquid ice is made of in this SF scenario/world) and even then wouldn't you say "ice" (for a load of cubes)?

    1. ices is accepted too, generally for the kind of italian desserts

      Delete
    2. Here in the states, there's at least 2 dessert items that could be called "ices" or even "icies". As Alex just said, the Italian Ice. Then, there's the Slushie drink.

    3. This is a British game, so if I noticed it being that weird, I just wrote it off as a British-ish.

      Delete
    4. Interesting, didn't know that. To me, "Italian ice" e.g. in German or Spanish just means regular ice-cream made by Italians / Italian-style, on a waffle or in a cup. And a Slushie is just called a Slushie.

The Dutch-language version of the Wikipedia page you linked also appears to have this latter understanding, based on the picture they use, see also e.g. this book.

  4. For its recent 25th anniversary, ScummVM has added 194 (!) newly supported games (and 12 new engines), including:
    - Amerzone: The Explorer's Legacy
    - Dracula: Resurrection & Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary

    - 6x Nancy Drew (+ fixed bugs in already supported games)
    - Dragonsphere
    - Chamber of the Sci-Mutant Priestess (AKA Kult)
    - Return of the Phantom

The full list and a link to the release notes can be found here.

The update includes bugfixes inter alia for Sanitarium, Lure of the Tempress and Riddle of Master Lu, too.

It also added MT-32 support to the TsAGE engine which powers Tsunami games like Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch, Return to Ringworld or Blue Force.

[Sorry for hijacking the comments on this post - given the many games covered I couldn't think of a more appropriate one and used the most recent.]

    1. This is a fantastic update! I really love this software.

    2. while ScummVM was great 20 years ago, I think that nowadays is just a snowball of impossible to properly fix mess.

I prefer Dreamm approach, a true emulator and not just some high level compatibility layer

      Delete
    3. ScummVM makes things a lot easier for the average user. Also, Dreamm is just for Lucas, and ScummVM has also become the most capable emulator for Sierra.

There's uses for everything in a certain time and place.

    4. My condolences to whoever plays/had to play Return of the Phantom because of this. Looking at the new list, I see The Fool's Errand on there, which is nice, even if there was already a pre-built package for it on the developer's official website. I also see Dungeon Master on there, which is nice...but there's also a regular style port which is probably better.

Regarding issues with it, I think ScummVM works fine as a general purpose adventure game source port, though the addition of text adventure/AGS/Wintermute engines are a bit unnecessary. For a lot of the games they're starting to add support to, they're from an era of Windows games which are becoming harder to play and the only real guaranteed competition for emulating them is something like 86box.

Though Dreamm is also becoming the same thing, if more of a true emulation rather than decompilation project, since there are now packs for Sierra, ID Software and Apogee titles. It apparently has surprisingly good compatibility, since it can theoretically run almost anything. I haven't tested it with any problem children I have though, so I can't confirm how well it works yet.

    5. Dreamm now has support for Sierra games? I can't find any mention of that.

      Delete
    6. I think not as a vanilla download but that third parties are writing their own addon packs for certain games, or something...

      Delete
    7. Yeah, third party add-on packs. Actually, slight correction, it needs the latest development version, which you need to be on their Discord to get, so I can't yet test it, but here's the Sierra pack:
      https://github.com/M-A-Boucher/sierra-dreamm
(The guy I found out all this from is trustworthy, but I won't blame anyone for deciding to wait on anything)

    8. As Michael said, just being able to use ScummVM out of the box for a lot of games is an advantage for many. For example, I think none of the games mentioned in my comment above show up in Dreamm's list of ('officially') supported games.

I might be what you could call such an 'average user'. For me, it's less about the absolutely best experience from a technical viewpoint or compared to the original regarding pixels, framerate, ratio, sound etc., but rather not having to deal with different emulators plus maybe third-party programs and fiddling with settings each time I play a different game in my limited time, plus having a decent, easy-to-use interface. I remember Amiga emulation for the Mac being a pain to me compared to the (mostly) click-and-play experience that was DOSbox or C64 emulators.

It's always good to have alternatives and knowing about them - I didn't know Dreamm - and others might have a different focus and priorities, but I can imagine for quite a few people ScumVM is still a good solution and therefore the above indeed great news in my book.

    9. Veterans of this blog already know how too much of a purist I am for ScummVM - but it's great for average users, being more accessible than DOSBox. On the other hand there is a case for this blog to strive for accuracy, but then again we're slowly entering the Windows era where having to run Windows 3.x/9x for an increasing amount of games would add another layer of hassle for reviewers.

On a related topic, earlier this year I installed MS-DOS 6.22 on MiSTer FPGA (a small open-source computer which physically reconfigures its FPGA chip to mimic the hardware logic of various retro platforms). I have entered another level of purism after DOSBox, at the cost of having to deal with DOS memory management...

      Delete
    10. When I play the games for the blog, I try to stay authentic. For example, I am playing HOF in DOSBox instead of using ScummVM.

But, like you said, keeping authentic is getting trickier with the Windows releases coming soon, and systems like Scumm have an added bonus -- they incorporate big fixes for issues that have been noticed over the last 30 years. (For example, think of people playing LSL3 on a fast Pentium, how many reps they needed to do in the gym without tweaking settings somehow (Mo'Slo was probably the best choice back then).

But you're giving me chills of the time spent fighting with 385Max back in the day...

      Delete
    11. for win games you just use the exo projects, its the best approach these days. You have one for win 3.x, and another one for win9x

      Delete
    12. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but aren't those basically abandonware torrents bundled with DOSBox?

    13. launchbox + dosbox X + win95/98 preinstalled with every codec and correct config hand tuned for each game to work

    14. How does this compare to the packages Biffman over at the Collection Chamber or Zombeaver on Zomb's Lair prepare for games no longer available for sale? At least the former mostly covers the mid- to late 90s.

      Delete
    15. @Busca: Similar, but slightly different implementation. The Collection Chamber is far less bloated if you are after individual games.

    1. Yeah, seems to be the usual nonsense about the rights to the games being shuffled around a million times in the last decade.

I've never played the newer ones yet (even though I've heard they aren't awful) so I just grabbed the two most recent (Wet Dreams once and twice) for about US$4, just because. Maybe I'll get a chance to play them soon.

    2. That article is an example for the relevance of original sources and things getting lost (and even confused and wrong) not just in translation, due to the pressure to permanently publish fast or perish. It states:

"Assemble Entertainment has announced that the final two titles in the Leisure Suit Larry series [...] will be delisted later this month from Steam and GoG." and links to a VGC article as reference.

Said VGC article, however, does -not- say the games will be delisted on GOG as well (just Steam), actually rather that it's probable they'll remain available there:

"It’s not yet clear whether this means the games will also be removed from other storefronts – when the previous games were delisted from Steam, they remained on GOG and are still there."

"Since Electronic Arts now owns Codemasters, it could be that the publisher has ended this licensing deal, meaning Assemble Games has to delist the games from sale. This would also explain why the series is still available on GOG, because the 2018 message states that the licensing deal with Assemble doesn’t include publishing on GOG."

"today’s announcement likely means the delisting of the entire series on all digital platforms except GOG"

Others, like delistedgames, unfortunately didn't bother to check better and update their information either:

"No mention has been made of other platforms where the games are still available but, like last year’s delisting of Larry’s older titles, it’s expected that both games will soon be removed from sale everywhere." In fact, the older LSL games are still available on GOG, as mentioned by VGC as well.

Also shows the importance of having (something like) GOG around - besides the obvious reason (DRM).

    3. Currently, with a 97% newsletter discount (redeemable until 21st October, 3pm CEST), the two most recent LSL games cost only EUR 0,90 and 1.05, respectively, at GOG. Should be similar in USD.

    4. Yup, super cheap. I think I paid US$3.75 for both.

Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: There's a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no points will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of the reviewer requiring one. Please...try not to spoil any part of the game...unless they really obviously need the help...or they specifically request assistance.

If this is a game introduction post: This is your opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that the reviewer won't be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return.
It's also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it. All score votes and puzzle bets must be placed before the next gameplay post appears. The winner will be awarded 10 CAPs.
