Game 168: The Legend of Kyrandia, Book 3: Malcolm’s Revenge (1994) - Introduction

Written by Michael

In the first Kyrandia game, we played young Brandon, a self-entitled prince who needed to save the land of Kyrandia from a psychopathic court jester named Malcolm.  In the second game, we played a mystic named Zanthia that Brandon briefly meets during the first game, and she saves the world from a maniacal giant hand that wants complete control.

In the third game, we’re going to be playing Malcom, in his version of an O.J. Simpson tall tale.  The premise of this game is that Malcom was innocent; he was framed by mystic leader Kallak, Brandon’s grandfather.

The manual sets most of the stage for what could be a Jerry Springer-esque tale.  It turns out that Malcolm was the product of a liaison between the king’s aunt and a court jester.  That is, the King William that he was imprisoned for killing, along with his wife.  William was probably the product of an encounter with the village blacksmith.

With a bunch of untimely, royal-inspired deaths, William inherited the throne, although by blood, Malcolm also could have been a contender.  It was Kallak who pushed for William.

When William and his wife Katherine were killed, it was with the same enchanted knife as King Gregor and Victor had been slain with.  Kallak blamed Malcolm, and then took over control of the government himself.  He had Malcolm imprisoned and hid away William’s son, Brandon, for safety.

Quoting the manual: “With Malcolm safely confined, Kallak ruled unopposed as Regent of Kyrandia for eighteen years. Malcolm, locked in the castle, turned sour during his imprisonment, and spent his lonely hours nursing his hatred for Kallak, and plotting his revenge upon the country which had believed the lies of Kallak and turned its back on the Royal Jester.”

Some odd notes before we begin: I’m playing the DOS CD version of the game, and it’s still only 320x200 resolution.  Huh?  The last game I played was double that.  For 1994, I’m a little shocked.  Also, there’s no more MT-32 support, so it’s going to be SoundBlaster music for this trip.

There’s still some common names in the game design, including teenage sensation Frank Klepacki doing the music again.

The low-res video intro to the game tells us about Malcolm after his birth, specifically about how he is ruled by his two consciences, the good one Stewart and his evil one Gunther.

It seems they go at it like cats and dogs.  When his good one is on top, we get the good headlines:

But then, the events from the manual bring us the other type:

And soon, a lightning strike to the statue of Malcolm (remember when we did that in the first game?) brings him back to life.

Notice anything different?  They moved the controls!  Bring the mouse to the bottom of the screen, and then you’ll see the stuff that took up valuable screen real-estate in the first two games.

According to the manual, the empty slot this time around is for our jester’s staff.  The dial to the right is the Moodometer, where we can adjust it to one of three settings, Nice, Normal, or Lying.  That will change our dialog choices in the game.

According to the back of the box, there are several alternate endings.  Also... that quote makes me want to dedicate this post to our blog’s founder, although he was much more than just a small Trickster to our world.

Wait, this game has a laugh track?

On to the betting.  The first Kyrandia game was one of my childhood favorites; the second I barely remembered.  Even though I own this on CD, I don’t remember playing this one at all.  So, I have no clue where this will go.  Past commenters have said that the second game was the pinnacle of the series, and that game is currently tied for tenth in our game rankings at 68.  The first game also had a healthy 62 as a score.

  1. 38. Worst one in the series, especially in puzzle design. The storytelling is emotionally flat too with as I articulated years earlier.

  2. Never played this one. It would be great that if at the end of the game it was revealed that all the backstory was a lie told by Malcolm itself, that he fooled the player and that he always was the villain. I say 55 for the score

  3. What are the other available walk speeds?

    1. It's a toggle between "saunter" and "hurry".

The language choices are English, French, and German.

And it does not save my choice for dialogue text, so every single game session, I have to load my game, and then change that option.

  4. Put me down for 48, 320X200 is rough for that time of the decade.

If Klepacki did the music I will give that a listen however, and if the other opinions on the game turn out to be true it might just end up being the best part of the whole game. Wait, maybe I can bet 5 caps on that?

    1. Hmmm, not exactly in the TAG rules, but we shall see how that works out.

    2. Fair enough, you're welcome to scrap the bet at your discretion. Having listened to some of the soundtrack I am however confident in my prediction at least, whether the house accepts the bet or not.

  5. "Zantha" is missing an i (and it was spelled with a Z only in the second game; it was "Xanthia" in the first one).

    2. Fixed the missing "i", thanks.

And thanks Laikku. Perhaps there was an alternate spelling in one of the translations that Anonymous saw?

  6. This was on of my first CD-ROM games. I think I got it right after KQ7. I remember being impressed by the graphics, voice and animations. I never finished the game, but i have very fond memories of it.

  7. I vaguely remember playing a demo for this? or maybe I got a dodgy copy that didn't have the intro? either way, something about it put me off playing it, despite being intrigued by the premise of playing as Malcolm.

    I'll guess 43

  8. I'll go for a round 40. I never got on with this game, despite highly enjoying the first two. The tone is all wrong, the laugh track needs to be turned off first thing. The pre-rendered backgrounds are disappointing after the gorgeous Rick Park pixel art in the previous entries. I never came close to reaching the end.

At least Klepacki steps up again with the music.

  9. Worse than the others, but still I would give it at least a 57.

  10. Never finished this one either. Had some unique vibes at least (even compared to the first two games). I'll say 46.

  11. Never played it, but the setting sounds really intriguing. Guessing 50.

Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: There's a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no points will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of the reviewer requiring one. Please...try not to spoil any part of the game...unless they really obviously need the help...or they specifically request assistance.

If this is a game introduction post: This is your opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that the reviewer won't be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return.
It's also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it. All score votes and puzzle bets must be placed before the next gameplay post appears. The winner will be awarded 10 CAPs.
