The Year Ahead - 1991

Written by Ilmari

The end of the year is coming quite fast, and since we are just getting used to the idea of a community driven blog, we thought that we should begin the discussion of the year ahead a bit earlier than Trickster used to. After all, we want to have more time to get eager volunteers for upcoming games.

For anyone uncertain about how this works, all games marked by Accepted are on the official gaming list. Readers can spend CAPs to transfer to the official list games which are marked as Borderline (50 CAPs for an individual or 100 CAPs for a joint effort) or Disregarded (200 CAPs). Just like last time, the below is now set in stone, so don't bother heading off to Moby Games to vote or Wikipedia to edit the Notable list. Any CAP trades need to occur before the introduction post for the last game of 1990 (King’s Quest V), after which time 1991's playlist will be set. Next year's games are to be played approximately in the chronological order wherever possible. All discussion on CAP trades for the 1991 playing list should be had on this post. The admin will be adjusting the CAP leaderboard and each game's status as trades are made.

This is the year when adventure games in general finally turned from parser-based EGA games into point-and-click games with beautiful graphics and hauntingly good music. I am sure many of you will want to relive your memories with some of the old classics coming up, or perhaps some of the more unfamiliar games might appear interesting. If you want to play and blog some of the games accepted in the official gaming list, you can express your interest in the comments here. So here we go!

  1. I see two very interesting games at the bottom of the screen... Oh, what the heck, 50 CAPs for Timequest and 200 CAPs for Spellcasting 201!

    1. Fine choice my dear fellow! I've deducted 250 CAPs from your purse and changed Timequest and Spellcasting 201 into Accepted games.

(Now that felt a bit multiperson-syndromish.)

  2. I loved Castle of Dr. Brain, but can agree that's it's not really an adventure game.

  3. I would like to use my new caps to put Sherlock Holmes on the list, please.

I have always wanted to play the Castle of Dr. Brain, ever since I met his ancestor in Quest for Glory 4. That is a tempting idea... how much now an adventure game is it?

    1. I've not played Castle of Dr. Brain, but I do want to... I think it's just a puzzle game really (basically a long version of the puzzles before you meet Dr. Cranium in QFG4).

But aren't adventure games puzzle games at heart? I'd be willing to split the CAP cost with you, if you like.

      Delete
    2. Sherlock Holmes put on the list and 50 CAPs deducted from Joe. Do you want to also volunteer for playing it? And can anyone verify its release date, so that we'll know its place on the list?

I'll just say this: if Myst deserves to be called adventure game, then Dr. Brain does also.

      Delete
    3. I will split the cost of Dr. Brain and volunteer to play the Holmes game. In fact, there are a few other "illustrated text adventure" Sherlock Holmes games which might be fun to compare and contrast. (One from Infocom and one from Melbourne House, that I know of, but given the characters were out of copyright, I'd imagine there may be more.)

      Delete
    4. Also, I may volunteer to play other games down the line. Right now, I hope to be the one to blog SQ4, Cruise, and Sherlock Holmes. (Plus, I have some great "Missed Classics" that I am working on...)

      Delete
    5. 100 CAPs deducted from both Joe and Andy and Castle of Dr. Brain added to the list.

      Delete
    6. OK, I've put you down as the blogger for Cruise and SQ4 also.

We've had a personal e-mail from Reiko saying that he'd be willing to blog Dr. Brain. I'll wait him to confirm that he'll still want to do it, before I write down anyone's name for that game.

    7. Hey, glad to see the love for Dr. Brain. (Btw I'm not a he! Hope this isn't a guys-only club!) And yes I'd love to play through it for you all. I would have done it even if nobody else was interested in putting up the caps, but hey, this is even better. Honestly I'm not sure it's quite as much of an adventure game as Myst, as there's really no story to speak of, but it's an adventure-like interface and plenty of fun puzzles.

      Delete
    8. Sorry, my mistake, this definitely isn't a guys-only club! This just shows how I am very poor in trying to put names and genders together (plus, I am not at all used to gendered pronouns, due to my native language having none of those, so I tend to make mistakes to both directions). Glad to hear you are willing to take care of Dr. Brain!

      Delete
    9. No problem. I'll probably get started on it fairly soon, to make sure it's ready by the time it's needed. I assume the final list in order will be published after 1990 is finished, as this list is alphabetical order, not publishing/playing order.

I am having trouble with dosbox though. I can't play it directly as I use Windows 7 64-bit, so I have to use something like dosbox to play it. It keeps freezing right away, though. I'll try a newer version first, but if anyone has any experience getting Sierra games to run in dosbox on Windows 7, I could use some confirmation of what dosbox version or settings might help.

      Delete
    10. The likely order can be found in the spreadsheet...

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvgUUR63koWodG9XVnp1TmJ1QnBoWnVoTlY0M1FvbHc#gid=1

So looks like, so far, Dr Brain would be a while off (Game 63)

Order can change though, if the dates are found to be inaccurate so if anyone has any reliable source contradicting our current stated release dates, feel free to let us know in this post.

      Delete
    11. Ok thanks. And I think I got it to work. I was originally trying to run it through windows 3.1 in dosbox, but that's a pretty bad idea I guess. Regular dosbox seems to be working so far.

  4. I feel wrong saying this, but...

200 points on les manley 2. I'm not capitalizing that. (I need to prove it wasn't as bad as its predecessor.) It's more like a brush with a bad cold than the fatal disease that was Search For The King.

    1. 200 points deducted from Aperama and Les Manley 2 added to the list. I assume you'll be volunteering to play it also.

      Delete
    2. Yeah. It's my penance for the pain that was seeing Tricky waddle through the first. (Please don't give Mr. manley any capital letters. People might notice.)

In truth, I've only played it once and just remember thinking "wow! No dead ends after the walking request for a hint book that was the first!" So I'll at least be giving close to a first opinion on it, as I only remember the LSL2-inspired scene with the bikini clad women who are seduced by les's knowledge of assembly code.

On second thought. Can I trade my CAPs in for an elective brain surgery instead?

      Delete
    3. Did someone gave you a piledriver recently, Aperama?! Are you nuts?!

      Delete
  5. I'm quite tempted to pay up for some of the borderline and disregarded ones.

I'll definitely pitch in for Space Quest I (VGA), because I love the SQ series. Might as well blog about it too, if that'll help.

    1. You guys are too fast, I am not keeping up with all the transactions! 50 CAPs deducted from Andy Panthro and Space Quest I remake added to the list. I've put you tentatively as the blogger for it.

  6. Perfect timing! I'm on break now, and I'd actually have time to play and blog!

Who the hell am I? you may be asking? I've been on-board with Trickster since (almost) the beginning, but don't comment as much as I should. Hence, I didn't heed the original call to blog. But now I'm here, baby!

Sign me up for LSL 1 (remake), LSL 5, Longbow, and if no one else wants to touch the turd that is PQ 3, I'll take that as well. Yes, I'm a Sierra guy, mostly. Maybe this'll expand my horizons eventually.

Let me know, and good luck to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, at least for now there's no contenders for those games, so I'll put your name down to them.

(One thing I've forgot to mention is that the current set of reviewers and admin have decided that if Trickster as the creator of the blog wants to blog a particular game, he should definitely be given the first chance).

You do understand that it's going to take a while before we'll get to these games? Of course, you can use your break to write the blog texts ready and we would just publish them at the right moment.

And oh yes, LSL1 is still borderline and your current CAP purse is still not enough for the game, but I might as well use 50 CAPs to put it on the list, if you want to blog it.

Also, since you are willing to do such a great number of games, I'd suggest you could join the Google Group of the reviewers: https://groups.google.com/d/forum/adventuregamer

  7. About Maupiti Island, well, it has the same defects as the predecessor. Annoying real-timeish, a touch of pixel hunting, people who moves around and get annoyed if you talk too much, and so-so speech synthesis with no subtitles. And, the most annoying part, a story that unfolds essentially independently of your actions and which is a tad annoying to reconstruct as a result.

    1. Sound intriguing... I think I must volunteer playing for it.

  8. I don't have many CAPs but I would donate all 5 of them to Elvira II if anyone gave the remaining 95.

By the way, I think we will have a new game in the first place when 1991 is finished, can we bet some CAPs to that? (of course, being the one giving the idea, I kindly request the right of making the first bet)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I won't deduct the CAPs, before all the required CAPs have been promised.

So you mean betting whether some game of 1991 will rise to the top? Sounds fun idea, but I guess the betting should begin nearer to the start of the new year (say, in the Year That Was -post),

    2. It's cheaper if you just front 50 CAPs, Kenny, but I'm not going to stop you from spending 80 CAps on it. ;)

      Delete
    3. I was hoping for another numbnut to chip in. XD

      Delete
    4. I can put CAPs also so Kenny doesn't have to spent 80 instead of 50. How about 40-40? :D

And I will gladly take Hugo II as one of my games. If I see another of those "What's the name of the dog in this show from the 60s" bullshit I may regret it but I did grow fond of the first one so...

      Delete
    5. 5 CAPs from Laertes, 15 from Zenic, 40 from Kenny and 40 from Deimar. Done! Elvira II is on the list.

And Deimar is now marked as doing Hugo II. (List is getting full really well.)

      Delete
    6. It was more a joke than a suggestion, after all Monkey Island II is coming and probably will beat every other game, but hey, easy CAPs if we get to bet!

  9. Looks like I don't need to spend any CAPs on this year's lineup - they've mostly already been bought for acceptance already.

If nobody else wants them, I might be interested in playing through Ecoquest or Timequest. I think I've played some of both a long time ago, but didn't finish them. I love Legend's text adventure interface in Timequest, which was used to great effect in the Gateway games (I'm so hoping we get to those...). I've played quite a lot of text adventures as well as some Sierra games. Only thing is that I'm no expert adventure gamer like Tricky or most of you, so I might need a bit more help. I really hate real-time limitations, too, which is why I tend to play turn-based RPG or more puzzly adventure games rather than real-time adventures or twitchy shooters or RTS or whatever.

    ReplyDelete

    1. OK, I've marked you as playing Ecoquest and Timequest.

    2. Reminds me of Circuit's Edge, which is why I don't want to play through it. Still, looks like an adventure game. If no one volunteers for it though, then leaving it out is probably best.

    1. Isn't Trickster the original source of CAPs? Like, he has infinite or something?

      Delete
    2. Nuh uh. That's not how it works. You don't see George Washington having infinite money just because he's the 1st Prez of US, right? I say, we give him 20 CAPs for starting this blog. XD

    3. I think Trickster is more like royalty, so the state (or the community) has to pay for his expenses.

  12. I was thinking that he should get 100 per game he reviewed, plus 20 for his "What's My Story" post. ;)

    1. Psh. As a total perhaps, but that'd kill the CAP economy that Canageek has spent so much time trying to game. He'd need to lose ten per game with a bet against them and twenty per riddle, clearly.

      Delete
    2. It's a little known fact that Trickster actually bleeds CAPs.

I'd rather not explain what Ilmari and I had to do to get the 100s of CAPs we had to deliver over the last week.

    3. So, if Trix wants to spend CAPs, we'd have to beat him till he coughs out the equivalent in blood? That's... BRILLIANT!

    4. I thought CAPs were created inside the stars like any other heavy element and then spread when they go nova, but TBD is probably right.

      Delete
  13. Looks like the only one on the list so far to not be accepted is "It Came From The Desert" which I'm happy with, as it isn't an adventure game but rather a game that is difficult to categorize at it straddles many styles.

I've already agreed to do a "Missed Classic" style review on the game if it remains unaccepted so nobody needs to worry about spending CAPs if they want to read a bit about the game here.

You can still spend the CAPs if you really want a full-on detailed playthrough of the game (which I'll also do if it's accepted)

Buy them on GOG instead! They have the full versions. And I quite like them (1 and 3 anyway, didn't like Dracula 2)

    9. I've looked up how Trickster decided to award mass promotion CAPs - it was in the Secret of Monkey Island posts.

5 CAPs per new game/sale up to 30 CAPs, then 1 CAP a piece for further ones. You were keeping track of the amount of sales yourself then - if you want to do that from this point that would make it a bit easier on us calculating them at the end.

That would mean so far in this post you've mentioned... whoah - 49 sales - meaning 73 CAPs so far. Make that 72, Realms of the Haunting is an action game - kind of fun, but not adventure

    Ok, fine, I'll be nice:
You wake from cryostasis to find your ship lying crippled on an uncharted planet; shards of platinum-iridium alloy puncture the shimmering alien sand, the wind passes quietly over dead hydrocolliders. It isn't known how long the ruined vessel has sat here, or even what caused the crash, but one thing is clear: Time is rapidly running out.
Stranded is a minimalist adventure game that foregoes dialogue and puzzles to focus on atmosphere, mystery, and exploration; it is both a love letter to classic point & click adventures, and an experiment with the fundamentals of the genre.
Assume the role of the astronaut, and explore the mysterious, sun-blasted wasteland to uncover something... anything, that might lead to your survival

Fingers that move the touchpoint are so tired. Only still posting out of obession and hatred of leaving tasks undone. Also I haven't had anything to do for the last 3 rounds of combat due to a combination of Black Tentacles and Deeper Darkness.

  21. Man I'm looking forward to willy beamish and it came from... Partially because I enjoyed them as a kid, but mostly because I never completed any of them but played them for so many hours (I was young and didn't speak great English). Btw, I can really recommend the Blackwell games. Very good old school adventures!

Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: There's a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no points will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of the reviewer requiring one. Please...try not to spoil any part of the game...unless they really obviously need the help...or they specifically request assistance.

If this is a game introduction post: This is your opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that the reviewer won't be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return.
It's also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it. All score votes and puzzle bets must be placed before the next gameplay post appears. The winner will be awarded 10 CAPs.
