What's Your Story? - sucinum

Out of the blue I've received a new What's Your Story entry! I guess it shouldn't be too surprising, since my Quest for Glory II crossover with Chet at the CRPG Addict blog has undoubtedly attracted some new readers. The below was sent in by a reader named sucinum. I was intrigued to know what the name meant, and after discovering it means amber in Latin, followed my nose across the interwebs. I believe his choice is connected to an Ultima-style RPG named Amberstar, which was a game released for DOS, Atari ST and Amiga back in 1992. How are my detective skills sucinum? Regardless, I hope everyone will join me in welcoming sucinum to the blog!

Without a picture, I figured a logo would a good second option.

My home country is… Germany

My age is… 34

The first adventure game I played was… Larry 1 at the age of eight. I had to make heavy use of a dictionary at that time and had to take some hints for the harder puzzles, but finally, I was successful (still before I was taught English at school). I think I could still finish the game blindfolded today.

My favourite adventure game is… Monkey Island 2, because it is the funniest adventure game, if not the funniest thing, ever. Also the riddles are awesome, plenty and challenging (but fair). I can hardly believe any reader of your blog is not a huge fan and suspect some of you to name your runner up for this question so it doesn't get monotonous. I won't!

Man, I can't wait to play this!

When I’m not playing games I like to… Read from people who play games, binge watch series, watch movies and generally don't do enough sports or care for family planning.

I like my games in (a box, digital format)… Nowadays, digital. I liked the gimmicks games used to have, but honestly, they collect dust anyways.

The thing I miss about old games is… My curiosity about games. I think games got better over time and there's a huge assortment of indie games nowadays for nostalgia.

The best thing about modern games is… I can't decide, so I'll have to take 2: Hard disks and the internet! Size is no longer an issue. In the old days, games had to fit on x discs and disc swapping was hell. Also loading times are minimal. I love the internet not necessarily for multiplayer, but I can exchange in forums or read blogs about basically every game, get hints if stuck and often enough updates, bugfixes and additional content. I can download every game on a whim and don't have to dig out discs.

Kids of today don't realise how good they've got it, nor what they missed out on.

The one TV show I never miss is… I really loved How I Met Your Mother, that has fantastic storytelling, is really funny and at times also touching. Too bad it's over. I also love series with superheroes and watched Smallville, Heroes and even Roswell. I might be up for Supernatural or Arrow next.

If I could see any band live it would be… I'm not too much into music and actually never have seen a band live. If I had to pick one, I'd take Faithless, heard their show is awesome.

My favourite movie is… That is really a hard one and I'm sure I pick another one every time I answer that question. Because I already picked the most obvious adventure, I'll go with a less known this time: Lucky Number Slevin. If you haven't seen it, you should! :-)

I really enjoyed this movie too, although it was called The Wrong Man over here. You have to admit, Lucky Number Slevin is a pretty bad name!

One interesting thing about me is… I'm a bit embarrased that Larry 1 played such a big role in my life. ;) I didn't even play the other parts of the series or too many Sierra adventures altogether (didn't like the parts where you die at every corner).

If there's anyone else out there that would like to share, or get their hands on 20 sweet CAPs, please send your responses to theadventuregamer@gmail.com.

  1. I remember playing Larry 1 after previously having played other Sierra games. Not only was I too young for some of the content, but not being from the USA added extra difficulty!

I can only recommend playing some of the other Sierra series though, once you remember to save often they're very good!

    1. For the moment, I'm quite happy reading about the Sierra classics, so I can catch up what I missed.
But especially Quest for Glory strikes me to play by myself!

I was far too young for Larry 1 and also not from the USA, but that just added to the challenge for me. :D

Exactly, they don't have to suffer what is shown in that image... (KQ5 that is).

    1. Those thrice-damned whippersnappers with their iPhones and XBoxes.

Back in our days, we had to do research with encyclopedias and had to piss on electrical fences for entertainment. And we LIKED it, hotdammit!

  3. Awesome detective work, that's true and also far more interesting than what I thought is interesting about me. I first went with amber as nickname, but found out that I get confused for a girl...

I had an Atari back then, so the awful loading times and disc swapping made Sierra games really hard to play and dieing was a real thread, which could take a lot of your time. I still found the games interesting, so I'm glad I can read about them here!

    1. People online think I'm a women all the time. I've yet to figure out why.

    2. I deny any connection to Charles being found dead in a pile of vintage adventure games.

Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: There's a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no points will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of the reviewer requiring one. Please...try not to spoil any part of the game...unless they really obviously need the help...or they specifically request assistance.

If this is a game introduction post: This is your opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that the reviewer won't be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return.
It's also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it. All score votes and puzzle bets must be placed before the next gameplay post appears. The winner will be awarded 10 CAPs.
