I'm not saying that Joe's definitions/eras are perfect, but do feel that at least MUDs are a reasonable omission. I've written up an intro to Spellcasting 101 and actually found myself saying that Infocom then Legend Entertainment are essentially some of the biggest names in IF 'outside of Japan' in agreeing with the notion of the visual novel as being the new version of IF, though.Aperamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13669724908141286435noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3387495443226852794.post-31844238294193023962014-12-12T11:45:52.912+11:002014-12-12T11:45:52.912+11:00In the taxonomy of adventure games, visual novels ...In the taxonomy of adventure games, visual novels are a conspicuous omission -- the Digital Antiquarian has an outstanding post on the subject. In particular, Sierra was a bit slow to the game for mouse-only adventuring, then they missed the boat on the puzzle-adventure and multimedia-adventure crazes later in the 90s. The only thing they didn't miss the boat on was the "crash". Alas!

I was just thinking about art styles a bit and I want to make an observation: the middle-late range of Sierra games (KQ5-7, QFG3-4, SQ4-6) have the art that seems to have aged the best. After around 1994, we get games like QFG5 and KQ8 that tried to be technically innovative but now look just "off".

Is there any connection between that and the decline of the adventure game? Probably not. But just some things that I am pondering.

Joe Pranevichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12997014242774219758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3387495443226852794.post-47674166839856729562014-12-12T09:41:27.973+11:002014-12-12T09:41:27.973+11:00Just a reminder that the "James Bond Trivia&q...Just a reminder that the "James Bond Trivia" contest will close when the PISSED post for Operation Stealth comes out in a few days. Let's face it, practically no one was doing parser-based graphic adventures, except Sierra (Hugo, Earthrise and Les Manley were probably the first Sierra clones, and they weren't published until 1990). Other companies mostly either continued with illustrated or even non-illustrated text adventures (Level 9, Infocom and Magnetic Scrolls) or were already doing primitive point-and-click (MacVenture and Lucasfilm).

As for text adventures in the blog, I'd also do it sparingly, mostly because a) you cannot get interesting screenshots and b) PISSED-rating does not work well with them. Then again, they might be good occasionally as thematic pieces: when the next Larry-game comes up, we might also do Softporn, when graphic Zork comes up, we might do original Zork-trilogy etc.Ilmari Jauhiainenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01655841880034965950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3387495443226852794.post-5095853328748594902014-12-12T07:08:18.203+11:002014-12-12T07:08:18.203+11:00Yes, the map lost too much in uploading it to the ...Yes, the map lost too much in uploading it to the blog. I wouldn't actually call them adventures in truth - they're more puzzle games with plot. FMV was the clear next innovation after the point and click genre as Kenjab points out. Then 3D interactive games where you often controlled adventure game characters through scenes that would fit Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil closer than any adventures before them (Grim Fandango/MI4, but I could continue this genre out to even The Longest Journey).

There were certainly no huge leaps between there - several dozen games during what some have called the dormant period or death of adventure gaming, but none that I'd actually give a separate categiry until Telltale/episodic gaming - and then Telltale again with what I perceive to be the modern adventure game, with QTEs and an emphasis on dialogue over puzzles that has am impact on the game's continued plot (Walking Dead/Wolf Among Us, for instance.)

On the post? Awesome work, Ilmari. I am still trying to work out what Rod, Snake and Bird would name their band, though. Text adventures prior to 1980 should absolutely be fair game because they are in the main trunk of the tree that our graphical adventures grew from, but after that I think they become too inexpensive to produce and there are just too many to do the genre a reasonable justice.

I sort of see the three eras of "adventure" gaming being:

1977-1980 - Text Adventures ("Adventure" and later)
1980-1984 - Illustrated text adventures ("Mystery House" and later)
1984-1993 - Graphical adventures ("Kings Quest" and later)
1994-Present - I see "The 7th Guest" (1994) and Myst (1993) as sort of the next pivot in the genre, but we will see how I feel when we get there and do a more complete job looking at the games!

I am personally finding the 1980-1984 era to be very interesting because I played some of those games, but I was too young to "get" them. I hope to do more "Missed Classics" of a few notable illustrated games in that era, but that I hope the overall thrust of the blog does not change from the calendar that Trickster started.
